PORTSMOUTH — Five more residents — four Republicans and one independent — threw their hats into the ring for the Town Council race on Wednesday, the last day to file candidacy papers for the November election.
The Republicans who filed Wednesday for the council race were Debra Cardoza, of 99 Summit Road; Lawrence J. Fitzmorris, of 50 Kristen Court; Paul Francis Kesson, of 3241 East Main Road; and Thomas R. Vadney, of 5 Brant Road.
Mr. Fitzmorris heads up the conservative taxpayer watchdog group, Portsmouth Concerned Citizens, and is a constant presence at council and School Committee meetings. Mr. Kesson is a former Town Council member, and Mr. Vadney currently serves on the School Committee.
Constance L. Harding, of 884 Union St., filed papers for the council race as an unaffiliated candidate.
Here’s the complete list of local residents who filed papers Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Unaffilated: Incumbent David M. Gleason, of 63 Massasoit Ave.; Constance L. Harding, of 884 Union St; and Judith J Staven, of 51 Long Meadow Road
Because eight Democrats are running for council — Mr. Roberts is the only unendorsed candidate — a primary will be necessary in September.

Republicans: Allen J. Shers, of 40 Roger Williams Court
Mr. Shers, who was appointed by the Town Council in October 2015 to fill a vacated seat on the School Committee, is running to fill a two-year unexpired term, not a four-year term.

John A. Pagliarini, Jr., of Tiverton announced his reelection bid for District 11 after filing his candidacy papers at Tiverton Town Hall. Mr. Pagliarini defeated Mr. Seveney in a special election in January to fill the unexpired term of Christopher Ottiano, who resigned the seat due to a potential conflict of interest with a new job.
In other news, Bristol resident Antonio “Tony” Avila (R) announced his candidacy for the House District 69 seat. Justin LaCroix of Tiverton is a Republican candidate for the House District 71 seat.
