To the editor,
After decades of ever growing wealth inequality, many of us in Rhode Island have seen our working hours increase, our income shrink, our property taxes rise, and our school buildings decay. Many who work hard and play by the rules seem to be losing ground.
That is why I joined with several of my colleagues to present the “Fair Shot Agenda” in an effort to level the playing field, stimulate our economy and make us more competitive with our neighboring states.
The “Fair Shot Agenda” is built on the belief that Rhode Island should be a state where working people do not have to sacrifice their health or their children’s health for fear of losing their job, and would allow folks to accrue earned paid sick days; where those working full time jobs do not live in, or on, the verge of poverty and would the minimum wage should rise from $9.60 to a livable $15; where working-class taxpayers do not struggle to simply pay their property taxes while large corporations get extensive tax breaks; and where students across the state are not forced to go to schools with leaking roofs, growing mold and crumbling infrastructure. The state should work toward addressing necessary repairs.
I am proud to fight for working families and will continue to fight until real progress is made for all Rhode Islanders because everyone in our state deserves a fair shot.
