EAST PROVIDENCE — Cheryl Silvia Mammone, despite some internet gossip, remains gainfully employed with the East Providence School Department, though she will no longer assist the city site with its Human Resources needs.
Seeking to quell rumors which came to light in recent days, Schools Superintendent Kathryn Crowley said through a surrogate Thursday afternoon, Aug. 25, it was her decision to recall Mrs. Mammone back full time into the district, ending a roughly six-month spell helping the city with its HR needs.
Conjecture had it Mrs. Mammone offered up her resignation and two-week notice with an eye towards taking another job. Speaking on behalf of the superintendent, her administrative assistant, Pat Iannelli, said there was no truth to any of the speculation and it was Mrs. Crowley's decision to return Mrs. Mammone solely to her unconsolidated position with the district.
Mrs. Mammone sent the following email, provided to eastbayri.com by the superintendent's office, to employees outside of the school department Thursday:
"Effective August 26, 2016 I will no longer be the Interim HR Director for the City of East Providence. Any further communication for the City should be directed to the HR Department or the Acting City Manager.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I had working with many of you and your departments. I have really learned a lot about East Providence and I credit all of the friendly and welcoming employees of the City.
"I believe the City of East Providence has a vast wealth of knowledge in the dedicated employees, managers and division heads employed by the City. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with all of you.
"Thank you,
Cheryl A. Mammone
Director of HR (School)"
Mrs. Iannelli said Superintendent Crowley made the decision based on a number of factors including the impending start of the 2016-17 term, ongoing draft of the district's fiscal budget and the need to focus primarily on matters pertaining to department employees with the beginning of the new school year.
Mrs. Mammone, at the request of now suspended City Manager Richard Kirby and with the approval of Mrs. Crowley, had been spending a portion of her time helping the city's HR Department in the stead of its likewise suspended director Kathleen Waterbury.
In light of recent events, including the city council's request to have Mrs. Mammone negotiate contract terms of interim City Manager Tim Chapman, Mrs. Iannelli said Mrs. Crowley thought it best to end the sharing of any duties. With that in mind, it is unlikely Mrs. Mammone will be involved in any further city side business.
