UPDATE: Driver dies after car slams granite post

Posted

A 27-year-old man died at Rhode Island Hospital Monday night just short of a day after his car went off State Road, Westport, at a curve and crashed straight-on into a large granite post early Monday morning.

The victim, identified as Taylor Green, originally from Aurora, Ill., was listed in critical condition midday Monday, said Westport detective Jeff Majewski, but died hours later.

Police say the driver was in the vicinity of 1203 State Road headed east at about 12:50 a.m. Monday when the car crossed the other lane, became partially airborne and crashed.

“It is believed the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed in excess of 75 miles per hour and did not brake prior to the crash,” Det. Majewski said.

Just before 1 a.m. today, police said Monday, the Dartmouth Police Department received a 911 call from a resident near 1203 State Road who reported the crash. Dartmouth and Westport police officers responded to the scene with Dartmouth Stat Ambulance Service and Westport Fire personnel.

The officers discovered a 2006 Nissan Altima with “catastrophic” front-end damage and a badly injured driver who was rushed by rescuers to RI Hospital..

Det. Majewski said that the vehicle’s engine was forced back into the driver’s compartment while the car battery was propelled about 100 feet east of where the car had stopped.

Police said there were several large items inside the car including an easel and a bicycle. The easel crashed through the windshield.

The Massachusetts State Police Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Unit along with State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office were called to help with the investigation.
