Dorothy Cordeiro, 79, of Benjamin Church Manor, passed away on June 25 at Miriam Hospital.
Born in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Artemizia (Sousa) Cordeiro. She was the sister of Mary Pendleton of Dover, Del., Artemizia Medeiros of Warren, Theresa C. Kruger of Bristol, Laura Ochs of Warren, Sister Elizabeth “Virginia” Cordeiro of Baltic, Conn., and Lorraine Calouro of Bristol. She was the sister of the late Elizabeth Steadham, Arthur Cordeiro, Manuel “Shorty” Cordeiro, Joseph Cordeiro, Anthony Cordeiro, John Cordeiro and Francisco Cordeiro.
Dorothy was a 1954 graduate of Colt Memorial High School and went on to study art at the Swain School of Design, in Worcester, Mass. She taught at Harrington Way Jr. High School in Worcester and later began working at the Naval War College, where she received a Meritorious Service Award from Admiral C. Kidd. Dorothy was a 16-year employee of the town of Bristol, with the majority of her service in the Parks and Recreation Department. Among her many other accomplishments, she founded the Bristol Christmas Festival in 1987.
Her funeral services were held June 29, from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Barry J. Gamache at St. Mary’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Theresa Kruger and Moses Calouro, who also read the Prayer of the Faithful. The offertory gifts were presented by Madison Calouro, Rachel Sardinha and Benjamin Calouro. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Mark Cordeiro, D.J. Cordeiro, Timothy J. Cordeiro, Timothy V. Cordeiro, Nathan Calouro and Moses Calouro.
