Stringfellow, Furtado are named high school deans

EAST PROVIDENCE — At the behest of the central administration, the School Committee approved a host of personnel appointments for the 2016-17 term during its meeting Tuesday night, June 14.

Superintendent Kathryn Crowley and District Human Resources Director Cheryl Mammone presented over two dozen job titles to the committee for its consent.

Among the most notable placements was that of Gregg Amore, who was appointed the district's new athletic director. A city native, East Providence High School alum and former coach, Mr. Amore replaces Bob Duarte, who resigned from the position earlier this term.

Mr. Amore leaves the classroom at EPHS where he was a History/Social Studies teacher for the last quarter century. He began his coaching career with the Townies' junior varsity baseball team back in 1989. He next became an assistant at his other alma mater, Providence College, before becoming head coach at LaSalle in 1993. He returned as the EPHS varsity baseball head coach in 1999, remaining in the post through the 2007 season.

Mr. Amore also served as the Townies' varsity hockey head coach from 1999 to 2008. He spent the decade previous as the team's assistant.

The committee approved Mr. Amore's appointment on a 3-2 vote. Chairman Charlie Tsonos, Joel Monteiro and Nate Cahoon voted in the affirmative. Jessica Beauchaine and Tony Ferreira were in opposition. Mrs. Beauchaine said she voted against the appointment because she had not seen the question rubric used during the interview process and her confusion over to whom the athletic director would report. Mr. Ferreira did not make known his reason for opposing the appointment.

The athletic director oversees sports for the entire district, including at the middle school level. Superintendent Crowley explained the AD would be supervised by both middle school principals, Dr. Cheri Guerra at Riverside and Fatima Avila at Martin, as well as EPHS principal Shani Wallace. She added the superintendent holds ultimate authority over the position.

Also from athletics, '16-17 fall coaches at the middle and high school levels were appointed/reappointed, Tony Vieira, who returns to lead the EPHS boys' soccer program after a one-year sabbatical. Mr. Vieira served as an assistant to the Providence College women's team last fall. Some will remember he along with EPHS hockey coach Kevin Croke, both city employees during the day, were embroiled in a controversy with former City Manager Paul Lemont over their use of paid personal/vacation time to coach.

The coaches were rehired as part of Superintendent Crowley's reinstatement of yearly reviews of the positions. The super said she annual appointments so the committee could officially vote on the hires and to more closely determine if the coaches were maintaining up-to-date certifications as required by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

In addition sports, the deans at EPHS were formally approved, each on unanimous 5-0 votes. Jon Stringfellow, who served in one of the positions for the first time this current term, was reappointed. Mr. Stringfellow, who acted as a dean on an interim basis this year, was appointed to the job on a regular basis as was Lian Furtado, who replaces Shane Messier in the other dean's post. Mr. Messier was recently appointed as one of the EPHS assistant principals, replacing the retiring Frank DeVall.

Mrs. Furtado previously served as a resource teacher at the high school. Mr. Stringfellow was a physical education/health teacher in the district from 1991-2015.

Of note as well, David Britto was approved in the dual role of assistant principal for discipline at the Francis and Waddington Elementary Schools. Mr. Britto was previously an elementary school principal in the district. He was approved after Superintendent Crowley clarified pending litigation against the district on Mr. Britto's behalf had been dropped. She did so in response to a question posed by Mr. Ferreira.

One last bit of personnel news, the committee and Superintendent Crowley formally recognized the retirement of Silver Spring Elementary School principal Kathleen Caffrey. Mrs. Caffrey, who was unable to attend the meeting when her retirement was announced last month, is stepping down after over 25 years in the district. She began her career here as a teacher at the old Union Primary School in Rumford. She moved to Francis for a decade-plus then became principal at Oldham Elementary in 2011. She has been Silver Spring principal since 2013.

"Kathy has been a wonderful advocate for the children at Silver Spring and she is one of the best educators I've had the privilege of knowing," Superintendent Crowley said.
