Clean-up begins at Barrington elementary school

Sowams School closed for the week after water leak

Posted

Sowams School students learned late Monday night that their summer vacation had been extended until Sept. 6.

An email from Barrington Schools Superintendent Michael Messore on Monday night stated that Sowams School would be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to allow for repairs to rooms that had been damaged by a flood inside the building.

Sowams closed after water leak floods classrooms.

"Today, there was a water leak in the second and third grade hallway at Sowams School," stated the email. "Upon further evaluation this evening by our insurance company and their contractors, it has been determined that sections of the classroom walls need to be removed and replaced. Therefore, Sowams School will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. This will include all afterschool activities. I anticipate that school will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 6. We will provide you with regular updates on our progress."

On Tuesday, the superintendent provided an update on the situation:

"Dear Parents: I wanted to update you on how the clean-up at Sowams is progressing. As part of the clean-up process, a hygienist is directly involved with the project to ensure air quality is satisfactory before continuing repairs. The contractor has been running drying equipment since last night; as well as, cleaning and disinfecting furniture, structure and personal property.

"As a precautionary measure, air quality testing has been conducted throughout the building. I anticipate a report on the test results tomorrow. At that point, if favorable, repairs will commence. Based on the work completed to date, I am optimistic that Sowams School will reopen on Tuesday, September 6."
