Mt. Hope, Rockwell schools shine as 2016 results are released

Mt. Hope High School had the greatest improvement in literacy in the state, and the Bristol Warren Regional School District as a whole was singled out for its improvements as the state Department of Education released the 2016 PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) results Thursday.

Mt. Hope improved its reading scores by 37 percent over 2015, RIDE announced, with 65 percent of students meeting or exceeding expectations in ELA-literacy. In 2015, just 28 percent hit the mark, according to a chart released by RIDE Thursday.

The education department also commended the Bristol-Warren district for its increased participation rates. Ninety-five percent of Bristol Warren students participated in the tests, improving over the 88 percent achieved in 2015.

Statewide scores in both the literacy and mathematics tests were generally higher, the DOE said, as was statewide participation in the tests, with 96 percent of students participating. Statewide — including all grades — 37.9 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in ELA-Literacy; 29.9 percent in math. Those numbers are up from 35.9 percent and 24.9 percent, respectively.

Every Bristol Warren school exceeded the state average in both English and math, with Rockwell School shining above all others. All Rockwell students participated in the tests, nearly doubling the state average in English with 70.7 percent of students meeting or exceeding expectations, and more than doubling the state average in mat at 69.8 percent.
