Boys Basketball: Tiverton hoopsters roll over Mt. Hope

Tigers remain unbeaten as season's mid-point approaches

BRISTOL — The Tiverton High School boys’ basketball team continues to exceed the high expectations set for them at the beginning of the season as they remain undefeated in Division III play. After yet another win Thursday afternoon, Jan. 12, over Mt. Hope the Tigers have improved to 7-0 even with an injured lineup.

Tiverton defeated the Huskies, 66-49. Carson Hart led three Tigers in double figures with a game-best 23. Tyler Murray and Steve Gacioch each added 15. Marquis Jones-Murchisun led Mt. Hope with 14. Darious Costa chipped in nine.
“I did not see this coming at all,” head coach David Landoch said. “At the beginning we were so injured with five out of our top seven players sitting down. We are still not a hundred percent, but we are getting there. We are working together even better now too.”
Offensively, Tyler Murray (junior, guard) is the leading scorer with Stephen Gacioch (senior, forward) not far behind, but it hasn’t just been one person according to Coach Landoch.
“Tyler has been great and a good leader while Stephen has been unbelievable too,” he said. “Michael Hrycin has been our anchor in the back and I really can’t single just one guy out.” Defensively, the Tigers have held their opponents to under 50 points in five games already which is a recognition of their team’s enthusiasm for both sides of the court.
“We are trying to hold teams around 50 points per game and we have done a pretty good job of that so far,” Coach Landoch said. “It is team work and effort on defense. They are always thinking of something that can make them better and it isn’t always coming from me. It is like I have five coaches on the floor.”
Even with a perfect league record, Tiverton has their eyes set on more than just the regular season.
“We don’t look at a record,” Coach Landoch said. “We just take it one game and one possession at a time. We have a goal of getting to playoffs and winning in the playoffs which is all that we are focused on.”

Mt. Hope notes
The Mt. Hope High School boys’ basketball team is well into its Division III league schedule with results being a complete mixed bag.
After starting the season off 3-1, the Huskies have since lost back-to-back games, including a setback to Tiverton on January 12, but head coach Jerry Darius is not disappointed.
“Not at all, not at all. There is nothing to be disappointed about, of course you want to win games, but it is about learning and what the team is doing,” he said emphatically. “Our guys are playing well, but we have to improve from the coaching to players.”
After just seven games, Coach Darius has learned a lot about his team what they have to improve upon.
“We have great potential on this team,” he said. “We are still very young and have to improve in a lot of areas, but we have amazing potential.”
Leading the way for the Huskies is senior, forward Marquis Jones Murchison who is averaging over 14 points per game.
“He is playing stelar and is leading us in a lot of statical categories,” Coach Darius said. “He is the leader of the team, but as I said there isn’t one guy who doesn’t have improving.
“We are dong it together and sharing the ball,” he continued. “All of our guys standout to me in different ways and at different times.”
With just seven games in the book and eleven remaining, Mt. Hope looks to improve in all areas to improve the final results in the remainder of the schedule.
“We have to get better at sharing the ball and attacking the basket, I think we can get a lot better,” Coach Darius said. “Overall, we have to do what we have to do to get better. There is not one area that we can’t improve in. Once we start to improve we will win more games.”
