Hikers are invited to experience the vastness of the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve at the 19th annual Big Walk starting and finishing at the Freetown/Fall River State Forest Headquarters on Slab Bridge Road in Assonet Village, Freetown. The full hike, on Saturday, May 7, at 9 a.m. is over 12 miles. Van pick-ups are available every 2 to 3 miles for those who only want to complete a portion of the walk.
In 2002 a unique public/private partnership was formed to permanently protect one of the largest tracts of unbroken forest in the Commonwealth. The City of Fall River, The Trustees of Reservations and others joined to establish the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve. At over 14,000-acres, the Bioreserve stretches from Assonet Village in Freetown all the way to Dartmouth and near Westport.
This year’s loop will take hikers through an Atlantic White Cedar swamp, the old Girl Scout Camp in Freetown and miles of single-lane trails through forests of pitch pine, white pine and oak in the northeast Fall River. This section has not been featured in past events. Other more familiar links such as Bent Rim Trail, Edmond House Road and Landon Hill Path will round out the route.
This year’s Big Walk is free and open to all ages including canine companions. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots and bring insect repellant, sunscreen, a water bottle and a bag lunch. Water refills and trail snacks will be provided along the way. To register or get more information call Mike Labossiere at (508) 324-2749, email mlabossiere@fallriverma.org
