Two recent grads earn spots on US Junior National Team

Barrington's Bobby Colantonio, Adam Kelly and Mike Alvernaz shared a special reunion on Friday at the USA Track and Field Junior Championships.

The three locals finished first, second and third at the meet at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif. — Colantonio was first with a throw of 243 feet, 2 inches, while Kelly was second with a throw of 239 feet, 6 inches, and Alvernaz was third with a throw of 211 feet, 6 inches.

Colantonio, graduated from Barrington High School earlier this month and will attend the University of Alabama in the fall, set a new state record in the 13-pound hammer event. He also held the previous mark of 240 feet, 6 inches.

Kelly and Alvernaz both graduated from Barrington High School last year; Kelly attends Princeton University and Alvernaz attends Troy.

Also of note, former Barrington High School standout Charlie Ionata had won the title at the USA Track and Field Junior Championships in 2014. Ionata now competes at Wake Forest.

On the team

Colantonio and Kelly have earned spots on the US Junior National Team in the hammer. The two will compete at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland July 19 to 24. This meet used to be called the IAAF World Junior Championships.
