Barrington science teams compete at nationals

High school Science Olympiad team enjoys its best finish yet

Students from Barrington High School and Middle School recently returned from the Science Olympiad Nationals in Wisconsin, where they celebrated a number of strong performances.

The local high school team finished 39th out of 60 teams from across the country. The finish was an improvement over last year's 52nd place finish. Meanwhile, the Barrington Middle School team finished 52nd against a field of more than 60 teams.

Some of the top performers for the high school were:

• Anatomy & Physiology — Kerry Eller and Ethan Wold — 6th place (an all-time BHS best)

• Astronomy — Michael Lamontagne and Ian Sabula — 23rd place

• Experimental design — Eliot Laidlaw, Dominic Portelli and Vincent Portelli — 25th place

• Geologic mapping — Callan Whitney and Ethan Wold — 22nd place

• Protein Modeling — Ryan Brady, Kerry Eller and Vincent Portelli — 22nd place

• Wright Stuff — Sidney Davis and Callan Whitney — 28th place

• Write it, Do it — Page Baldwin and Dominic Portelli — 15th place

Alexa Collins, Samyukta Mallick, Conor Mc Gartoll and Sam Wohlever also competed for the Barrington High School team. In addition, Richard "Tripp" Carolan, Ingrid Kenyon and Riley Boone served as alternates, competing in trial events which are piloted at the competition for the first time. In the piloted events, Tripp and Ingrid earned 14th in mystery design and Trip and Riley earned 16th in remote sensing.

The middle school also enjoyed a number of strong performances. 

• Amy Zhao and Jack Kelty for Dynamic Planet — 25th place

• Joshua Guertler and Aidan Roche for Green Generation — 39th place

• Kelly Gorman and Clara Kugler for Bio-Process Lab — 35th place

• Jessica Liang and Jack Kelty for Meteorology — 36th place

• Eleanor Wind and Ethan Tutt for Road Scholar — 36th place

• Eleanor Wind and Jaya Gottlieb for Bottle Rocket — 33rd place

• Jessica Liang and Athena Gong for Potions and Poisons — 15th place

Rebecca Ferry and Chris Millard were the middle school coaches who attended the tournament, while Sonalya Jayasuriya and Kara West were the high school coaches at nationals.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
