Some Sowams School walls must be removed; no classes for the remainder of the week

Parents of Sowams School students learned late Monday night that classes at that school would be canceled for the remainder of the week while crews repair walls damaged during a recent flood.

A water line inside the school broke over the weekend and when school officials arrived at Sowams on Monday morning, they discovered about a half-inch of water in the second and third grade hallway.

Teachers maneuvered around the impacted areas on Monday — some moved their classes to the cafeteria while others went outdoors.

On Monday night, Sowams School Principal Jim Callahan shared an email from Superintendent Michael Messore, which notified parents of the need to cancel classes for the remainder of the week:

"Today, there was a water leak in the second and third grade hallway at Sowams School. Upon further evaluation this evening by our insurance company and their contractors, it has been determined that sections of the classroom walls need to be removed and replaced. Therefore, Sowams School will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. This will include all afterschool activities. I anticipate that school will resume on Tuesday, September 6. We will provide you with regular updates on our progress."

The district had already scheduled no school for Friday, and Monday is the Labor Day holiday.
