Barrington neighborhood in bloom with American flags

Appian Way resident and his son start patriotic display

The Alfred Drown neighborhood in Barrington appears ready for Independence Day this year, thanks to Sam Ang, his son, Ian, and a small army of volunteers.

Mr. Ang and his son recently organized a team of volunteers to line the roadways of the Alfred Drown neighborhood with hundreds of American flags. The display has drawn the attention of passersby and the admiration of Mr. Ang's neighbors.

Mr. Ang said his old neighborhood of Las Colinas in Irving, Texas, had a long-standing tradition of planting Fourth of July flags. Las Colinas called it "The Great Flag Caper" and it featured upwards of 40,000 flags.

"The whole town was planted red, white and blue," wrote Mr. Ang in a recent email. "A sight to see."

The Angs moved to Barrington's Alfred Drown neighborhood in Dec. 2012 and Mr. Ang and his son decided to bring the tradition to life here, as well.

"We decided to bring the Flag Caper project to our wonderful neighborhood of Alfred Drown where we already have a community list-serve, a wonderful annual Halloween parade and party and summer block parties all organized by neighborhood volunteers," Mr. Ang wrote.

"Starting on our first year in 2013 with one street (Appian Way), we grew to covering every street in South Drowneville last year with 250 flags. This year the neighborhood swung into action with volunteers and generous donations to increase our flag inventory to over 1,500 flags to cover the whole neighborhood.

"Not sure where we go from here. But we definitely plan to keep Alfred Drown painted red, white and blue as a new tradition."
