Barrington girls win frosh/sophomore track meet

Barrington High School captured top honors for the girls at the Freshmen/Sophomore Invitationals on Saturday, April 16.

Freshman Annika Kelly won two events — the hammer throw and the discus. Kelly had a top throw of 144 feet, 1 inch in the hammer, and had a throw of 89 feet, 6 inches in the discus.

Courtney Howarth won the triple jump event, with a distance of 30 feet, 8.5 inches, and Barrington's 4x800 meter relay team was tops in its event. 

The girls finished with 99.2 points, ahead of second place Central (67.5 points), and third place West Warwick (58.2 points).

On the boys' side, Barrington's team finished third with 68 points, while North Kingstown was first (111 points) and Cumberland was second (75 points). Barrington's Sam Read scored key points for his team, taking first place in the 200 meter race with a time of 23.7 seconds. He also ran to a second place finish in the 100, with a time of 11.41 seconds.

High jump: 5. (tie) Kate Davis and Morgan Spears, 4-2

Long jump: 4. Abby Walter, 13-11; 6. Olivia Middleton, 13-8.5.

Triple jump: 1. Courtney Howarth, 30-8.5.

100 — 5. Middleton, 13.5.

800 — 2. Anna Downes, 2:38.5; 6. Lily Safranek, 2:46.0.

1,500 — 3. Teá Bishop, 5:24.8

4x100 — 3. Barrington, 55.9

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
