Unlimited and Junior Varsity Pop Warner teams grab victories

In a hot opening day showdown of the Unlimited Pop Warner Class, the Barrington Eagles defeated the Coventry Rams 31-0.

After receiving the kick, Coventry opened with a first down pass; the Ram QB was looking to hit his big tight end and was unceremoniously sacked by d-tackles Evan Van Bree and Sergio DaSilva. On third and 12, Quinn Gaffney and Josh Nutter stopped an off tackle and forced the Rams to punt.

The Eagles took over on their own 40 yard line. The Eagles wasted no time and on first down handed to the “Bolt-like” Mark Bernardo who picked up dominating blocks by Gaffney, Cole Glazzard and Luke Gorham, shot around right end and streaked 60 yards untouched.

On the next series, the defense continued its dominant play. Marley Karnes made a jarring second down stop. On third and 7, linebacker Thomas Rocha closed down a run and was helped by Karnes and Declan Cooke.  Again Coventry was forced to punt.

Bernardo went around left end for 18, following a nice block by Brett Hoder and Lukas Mendonca. Brigham Dunphy then hit Cole Reed on quick screen pass and Reed went for 8. On the next play, Dunphy faked to Bernardo and went off tackle for a first down. Glazzard at fullback then followed AJ Prete and Mike Cox for 5 yards, and then from the 15 yard line, Bernardo went off tackle right, bounced it outside picking up a Gaffney block and then cut left all the way back across the field for a TD. Glazzard added the 2 point kick and the Eagles went up 16-0.

The defense continued to exert itself. Spenser Thys made a solo tackle from his defensive end spot and Reed deflected an out pass, almost picking it off on second down. Gorham and Rocha continued to make plays from linebacker and once again the Rams punted to the Eagles. Reed handed off to Thomas McAdams for a 8 yard gain and then to Cooke for a 3 yarder. A penalty caused a fourth and long. QB Cole Reed faked an inside handoff and gave the ball to Gorham on a reverse around the left end. Gorham picked up blocks by Jack Kelleher and Aiden Keenan and outran the Rams 65 yards to the end zone. The Eagles went up 22-0 on a Glazzard P.A.T.

In the second half the battle continued and the Eagles ran for two first downs before having to punt. Cooke boomed a sky shot over the Ram return man and pinned the Rams deep. Linebacker Mike Cox stopped a power along with Keenan setting up a critical fourth and four. On this play McAdams attacked a screen pass and almost picked the ball off. The Eagles took over on downs. A stiff Ram defense kept the Eagles out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Cole Reed, started off the final scoring drive by hitting McAdams on a sideline pass good for 15 yards. Bernardo and Glazzard runs behind Van Bree and Nutter produced another first down and then Reed connected with a diving Quinn Gaffney for another first down. Reed then rolled left and hit Karnes on the 4 yard line for an 18 yard pass play. Glazzard finished the drive with a 4 yard run for six. For the extra point McAdams took a handoff left behind Brett Hoder.

D-coordinator Mark Bernado commented on the game: “Our defense was agile, mobile, and hostile today. Our linebackers were relentless to the ball and our d-line led by Van Bree was disruptive. And now we are moving on to South Coast.”

The Eagles, now 1-0, face off against South Coast at Old Rochester High School next Sunday.

Junior Varsity

The Bagels Etc. sponsored Junior Varsity football team won a hard fought effort 22-19 over the East Bay Warriors.

The Eagles opened up the season with an eight minute 15-play drive. Great runs on the drive by Scotty Gausland and Willy Sanchez. Jax Gorman completed four passes on the drive including a 25 yarder to Mike Uriati on third down. Sanchez took a handoff over right tackle, bounced out side and darted in from 20 yards out to open up the scoring (Sanchez kick). Dave Raposa, Andrew Jameison and James Anderson had great blocks on the play.

The home team's defense shut down the Warriors on the next drive. Big hits from William Loew, Dante Salvaggio and Ethan Tomulonis led the charge. Raposa recovered a fumble to stop the drive.

Barrington got the ball back and marched down the field behind the solid blocking from Luke Wilcox, Matt Daft and Conner Nelson. Gausland and Sanchez, who both rushed for over 100 yards led the attack back down the field. On third down Gorman hit Uriati on a 15 yard touchdown deep in the corner of the end zone (Sanchez kick).

East Bay was able to score on a long pass just before half to make it 16-6 at the intermission. The secondary was led by Jay Scheifflin, Jack Kelty and Bryan Ivatts who were all in on key tackles. Garrett Lepore made some nice stops from his nose tackle position.

East Bay was able to score twice on some big play to make the score 19-16 with five minutes remaining. The defense held on a late drive with big plays from Scheifflin, Raposa, Jameison and Sanchez. Barrington could not be stopped on the next drive. Sanchez had a couple good runs, and Gausland took an option pitch for a 20 yard gain. Then Gausland darted off right tackle for a 20 yard score. Sanchez picked off a Hail Mary pass to end the game.

The Eagles play at the Dartmouth Indians next Sunday.

Pee Wees

T he Dick’s Sporting Goods Pee Wee Eagles faced off against the East Bay Warriors at Victory Field and the two teams finished in a 19-19 tie.

The undermanned Eagles came out with a strong running attack led by backs Joe Mederios, Riley Greene, and Luke McManaman. The running backs had plenty of opportunities as offensive linemen Dan Lemos, Devin Mederios, Owen Lawson, and Lucas Bianco led the way. The Eagles led 13-6 before a last second score by the Warriors tied it up at halftime.

After a great special teams play by Alexander Duffy, a fired up Eagles offensive drive was stalled due to a turnover that gave the Warriors the chance to take the lead. The Pee Wee team continued to battle back in the game. The defense, led by Parker Hughes, Christopher DeSisto, Evan Waite, and Adam Camille, continued to shut down the Warriors offense.

Quarterback Ethan Hines led the Eagles down the field to the 1 yard line where a partisan home crowd thought they saw the home team tie it up. However, the referees saw it otherwise and the ball was turned back over after a stop on fourth down.

The Eagle defense again shut down the Warriors and the Eagles were given a last shot. With Adam Gravelle at center, Hines led a drive that had the entire crowd on its feet as the Pee Wee team powered into the end zone for the tying touchdown with seconds left in the game. An unsuccessful two point conversion kept the game at a 19-19 tie but all players left the field with heads held high.

Junior Pee Wees

The Linen & Concrete Barrington Junior Pee Wee lost their home opener 7-6 to the East Bay Warriors. Barrington scored first in the second quarter when Luca Marino ran for a 16 yard touchdown. East Bay scored on the next possession on a 60 yard touchdown pass. East Bay ran in for a successful extra point.

The game was back and forth with good plays for both teams. Barrington backs had some long runs but they just couldn’t get another score.

Chuckie Potter had a 62 yard run, Mitchell Ivatts ran for 18 yards and Brady Fisher had a 17 yard run. Barrington’s defense played well due to key tackles by AJ Diorio, Kevin Robinson, Troy Van Ness, Kurt Donecker, Ben Martel and Owen Willard. Luke Van Ness also recovered a fumble.

Mighty Mites

The Barrington Mighty Mites played tough against East Bay but came up short, 26-13.

Barrington fell behind in the first quarter but came back on offense with Kellan Johnson pounding the ball up the middle and capping the drive with a 60 yard run for a touchdown by Shea Parish. The blocking on the offensive line was solid all day with Ryan Rigamonti, Jeff Caggiano, Alex Zillan, Sanders Toman, Henry Alfonso,  Joseph Dean and Nathan Kreft. The Eagles added the extra point with a diving reception from Johnny Raposa.

The Eagles started the second half with the ball and quarterback Jacob Raposa rolled right and completed a 15 yard pass to Lloyd Kenig who broke free after a key block from Jackson Warner for a 40-yard touchdown. There was also some outstanding tackles in the second half the defense from Luke Deschenes, Hayden Farley and Riley Mears.
