Barrington council president not running for re-election

Cynthia Coyne will face a Republican challenger for her Senate 32 seat

June Speakman, a longtime fixture on the Barrington Town Council, is not running for re-election this year.

According to information shared by the town clerk's office, Ms. Speakman, a Democrat, did not submit her declaration of candidacy by the 4 p.m. deadline on Wednesday, June 29. She is currently the council president.

Three council seats will be up for grabs this November — those belonging to Ms. Speakman, Kate Weymouth and Ann Strong. Ms. Weymouth, a Democrat, will run for re-election, as will Ms. Strong, who filed as an Independent.

Democrats Steven Boyajian and Melissa Horne also submitted paperwork declaring their intentions to run for town council. Republicans Peter Dennehy and Geoffrey Grove will also run for the open seats, as will Independent candidate Albert Louis Langella, Jr.

The school committee race will feature three Democrats and one Independent running for three open seats. Anna Clancy, an incumbent, and first-time candidates Megan Douglas and Pamela Lauria will run as Democrats, while Gina Pine is running as an Independent. Bob Shea, a Democrat, and Patrick Guida, a Republican, are not running for re-election.

House, District 67

Barrington resident Jason Knight is running against incumbent Jan Malik in a Democratic primary for the District 67 (Barrington and Warren) seat in the House. The winner of that primary will face Libertarian candidate and Warren resident Darryl Gould in the November elections.

Senate, District 32

Democrat Cynthia Coyne is running for re-election in the District 32 seat in the Senate, and will face Republican challenger James Kazounis. Both Ms. Coyne and Mr. Kazounis are Barrington residents; the seat covers portions of Barrington, Bristol and East Providence.

House, District 66

Barrington resident Joy Hearn, a Democrat, will run unopposed.

Town moderator

Julia Califano will run unopposed for moderator.

* Editor's note: An earlier version of this story reported that Patrick Guida was running for re-election to the school committee. Mr. Guida withdrew his declaration of candidacy on Thursday. He said he had prepared the declaration to ensure that there were enough candidates running for the open school committee seats. With four other candidates running, said Mr. Guida, he decided to withdraw his declaration. Mr. Guida, a Republican, has served on the school committee for 20 years.
