Barrington Middle School scores jump on PARCC

Most Barrington schools see marked improvement on test scores

Posted

The majority of Barrington students' scores on the recent PARCC assessments improved.

Data released by the Rhode Island Department of Education last week showed better marks at nearly every level and on both portions of the assessments, math and English language arts.

Barrington elementary school closed for repairs.

In mathematics, Barrington students showed, on average, a 9 point improvement over the prior year's scores.

In 2015, nearly 60 percent of the Barrington Middle School students tested scored either a 4 or a 5. (A 4 is given to students who meet expectations while a 5 is given to students who exceed expectations.)

In 2016, more than 70 percent of the middle school students in Barrington received either a 4 or 5 on the PARCC math assessment.

The results were equally impressive on the English language arts assessment. In 2015, almost 74 percent of the middle school students tested scored a 4 or 5, but that figure jumped to 82 percent this year.

The district's elementary schools also celebrated some improved PARCC scores. In 2015, about 63 percent of the elementary students tested in town scored either a 4 or 5 on the ELA assessment. That number rose to nearly 66 percent this year.

It was a similar trend in math, as 60 percent of local elementary students scored a 4 or 5 last year, while nearly 70 percent hit that mark n 2016.

The high school recognized mixed results. In math, the percentage of students scoring either a 4 or 5 went from 46 percent last year to 53 percent this year.

In ELA, the scores dipped a bit. About 77 percent of the students tested last year scored a 4 or 5, while only 75 percent scored a 4 or 5 this year.

As a district, Barrington's marks in ELA (74.5 percent of the students tested scored a 4 or 5) were some of the best around. Only a couple of charter schools — which had much smaller pools of students tested — achieved comparable or slightly better marks. East Greenwich, which often battles Barrington for the top test scores in the state, had about 68 percent of its students score a 4 or 5 in ELA.

In math, the district had about 66 percent of its students meet expectations or exceed expectations. Jamestown — it does not have a high school — had about 66 percent of its students score a 4 or 5, and one charter school also had a better percentage of students score a 4 or 5.

Following are school-wide results (percentage of students scoring a 4 or 5):
