Sam Faulkner leads hit parade with home run and double

The Barrington Little League 12-year-old All Star team held off a tough Bristol squad in the opener of the District II tournament on Monday night at Sherwood Field. Barrington won the game 10-5 and advanced to host Middletown on Wednesday, June 29.

Barrington's Sam Faulkner started the scoring early for the hometown team, as he blasted a lead-off home run in the first inning. The hit carried clear over the centerfield fence and provided Barrington with an early 1-0 lead.

Bristol battled back and took a 2-1 lead, but Barrington scored five runs in the third inning. Aaron Brady, Ned Shapiro, Bryan Ivatts and Jack Abadi each had RBI singles in the inning, and helped Barrington to a 6-2 advantage.

Bristol fought back again and cut the lead to 6-5 in the top of the fourth, but Barrington's offense exploded for three more runs in the bottom of that inning, led by Aaron Brady's triple to the right centerfield fence that drove in two runs.

Faulkner, who opened the scoring for Barrington, also capped it with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Defensively, the Barrington All Stars played very well. The hard-throwing Jacob Koble was solid on the mound — he went 5 and 1/3 innings and struck out nine Bristol batters. Andy Fletcher closed out the game in relief, while Jack Kriz was strong behind the plate, catching five innings.

"The kids worked extremely hard to get ready to face this strong Bristol team and it really paid off," wrote Barrington Manager Chris Abadi in a recent email. "On top of our hitting and pitching, we played great defense. I was really proud of them and it was a nice way to start the tournament."

Barrington is slated to host Middletown at 5:45 on Wednesday, June 29 at Sherwood Field.
