Bake sale benefits Portsmouth Veterans Honor Roll Project

PORTSMOUTH — Here’s a roundup of some local news pertaining to veterans:

• The Portsmouth Veterans Honor Roll Committee will hold a bake sale from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, at Clements’ Marketplace to support the Veterans Honor Roll Project. Visitors are invited to stop and purchase some baked goods.

• Newport Navy Choristers will host a “Christmas in Song” concert at St. Lucy’s Church, West Main Road, Middletown, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9.

• Wreaths Across America will be hosted by the Surface Navy Association-Newport Chapter at noon (assemble by 11:30 a.m.) on Saturday, Dec. 17, at The Island Cemetery, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry gravesite. The ceremony will be followed by volunteers helping to place 300-plus wreaths at veterans’ graves.

• A Veterans Job Prep Workshop (Edge 4Vets) will be hosted by the Community College of Rhode Island, 400 East Ave., Warwick, from 1-4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9. Companies sending mentors include Hasbro, CVS Health, Textron, United Natural Foods and many more. RSVP by e-mailing Tom Murphy at tom@tommurphy.org. • The VFW Post 5390 December meeting has been rescheduled from Dec. 26 to Monday, Dec. 19.

• There will be no December meetings for the American Legion Post 18, the DAV Chapter 15 and the Bristol Veterans Council.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
