Bad accident in Portsmouth with multiple injuries

At least one patient transported by helicopter

PORTSMOUTH — Police and firefighters stayed busy today with a serious, multi-vehicle accident on West Main Road early this evening, just south of King’s Grant.

The Portsmouth Fire Department is reporting that five patients were transported to three different hospitals.

A witness said three vehicles were involved and that one driver fell asleep at the wheel, although that has not yet been confirmed.

A medical helicopter transported at least one occupant and rescue workers from several different towns assisted.

No word yet on the condition of any of the occupants, but there are reports that two people had to be extricated from their vehicles.

A large section of West Main Road was closed off, with traffic diverted to alternate routes.

We will share more information as it comes in.
