Williams shines for East Providence boys at Schomp outdoor track invitational

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — The La Salle girls’ squad successfully defended its Rick Schomp Track & Field Invitational team championship on Saturday, May 4, while Hendricken nipped a strong East Providence team, 71-69, in boys’ scoring at the sole co-ed event of the outdoor regular season held annually at the Curtis Corner Middle School facility.

The Rams out pointed second-place South Kingstown, 91.5-46, to take the girls’ crown. La Salle’s Sheridan Wilbur took the gold in the 1500 (4:39.20), and the Rams clocked 4:05.70 to win the 4×400 relay.

East Providence put together a strong boys’ lineup, featuring sprinter Ryan Williams, who captured a pair of firsts. He clocked 10.60 to win the 100 meters (his second Schomp title), and 21.90 for gold in the 200. The Townies placed second in the 4×100, and third in the 4×800.

For his efforts, the EPHS junior was chosen as the meet’s Most Valuable Performer.

Over at the long jump pit, EP’s Chris Moura leapt 20-11.50 (6.38) to give his team 10 more points. In the triple, the Townies collected an additional 18 team points. Trystan Casey went 41-7 (12.67) to win the event, and Moura came in second (41-4/12.59).

Notable Notables

Woonsocket senior Kaylnn Pitts was the only double winner in the girls’ portion of the meet. Pitts cleared 5-3 (1.60) in the high jump, and 36-2 (11.02) to take the triple jump . . . Bay View’s Erica Johnson clocked 2:15.20 in winning the 800. Johnson battled La Salle’s Wilbur, who placed second in 2:15.70 . . . Emma McMillan, the Barrington freshman who last fall captured the state cross country title, was gold at the Schomp meet with her victory in the 3000. Mc Millan clocked 10:17.70 to 10:38.90 for Classical’s Maddy Berkson . . . Hurdles specialist Maria Bolobruch, of North Kingstown, went 14.80 to win the 100-meter high hurdles, successfully defending her ‘12 Schomp title . . . It was Classical’s Marthaline Cooper in the hammer throw, with a winning distance of 161-7 (49.25) . . . Prout senior Karly Gregory handily won the girls’ long jump with a mark of 17-1.75 (5.22).
* Trevor Crawley, who last November shared the winner’s circle with Barrington’s Mc Millan as the state’s cross country champion, clocked 8:48.50 on Saturday to take the boys’ 3000 meters . . . Tom Barry, of Barrington took gold in the 800 (1:58.70), while Ben Fazio, of East Greenwich, won the 1500 (4:05.50) . . . The league’s leading shot putter, Coventry senior Aaron Comery, put the ball 53-1.25 (16.18), to win the Schomp event . . . And defending Schomp champion Charlie Ionata, of Barrington, won the hammer comeptition with a mark of 225-10 (68.83) . . . North Kingstown’s Conor Hayward cleared 13 feet (3.96) to take the pole vault . . . It was Westerly’s Joe Colao who was good for gold in the discus, at 159-9 (48.69), some 13 feet ahead of the second-place finisher . . . Zach Hurd, who recently competed at the Penn Relays javelin competition, won the Schomp event with a throw of 179-3 (54.63).

Oval Notes

Two major qualifiers will take place next Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. The Classical Classic for boys will be held at Conley Stadium, while the Cumberland Girls’ Invitational will take place at the Clippers’ track . . . Division Championsips get under way this week. All meets are slated to begin at 4 p.m. The schedule: Monday, 6 May – Boys’ Northern at Cumberland; Boys’ Southern at South Kingstown. Tuesday, 7 May – Boys’ Central at Hendricken; Boys’ Eastern at Barrington; Girls’ Southern at Exeter/W. Greenwich; Girls’ Northern at Cumberland; Girls’ Central at Cranston West. Wednesday, 8 May – Girls’ Eastern at Barrington.
