In fact, given a net gain in player numbers, Coach Lincoln says there’s nothing wrong with aiming high at the outset..
“Our goals for the season are to with the league championship, make it to the states, win the South Sectional, and finally the states.”
Gone to graduation are captain Layla Moran, Alyssa Kochman, Kristin Duarte and Morgan Levesque.
“We only had nine players last year and for about half a year we played with six or seven because of various injuries,” the coach said. “This year we have enough ladies signed up to run two levels (varsity and jayvee) which will help in player development.
The team has some good experienced players coming back to provide leadership.
Brittany Arruda, junior captain, will share the shooting and point guard positions with whomever wins the over guard position during the preseason.
“Our other junior captain, Sam Medeiros, will hold down the power forward slot which she has been patrolling for two years. Senior Allison Abgrab looks to fill the 4-hole after her play off the bench last year. Sophomore Reaghan Tripp will play the center position after coming off the bench and starting last year.”
Three upper class girls — either first timers or returning after absences — have joined the squad. “Senior forward Kim Abgrab is back after two years away, (and) junior forward Khoryn Cote and junior guard/forward Kylie Marcoux will help this young roster.”
Four freshmen, each in a different position, add depth to the roster — Haley Charest, Kara Figuerido, Grace Moran and Kayla Ure. “These young ladies may be needed sooner than later to give us significant playing time.”
The newcomers provide Westport with enough players for a jayvee squad of eight or nine players. They’ll be led by assistant coach Celia daLuz.
The Wildcats will play in a league that has been realigned for the next four years.
Westport picks up tournament-tested West Bridgewater and Holbrook to its list of opponents along with Sacred Heart, Bishop Connolly and Avon “for a tough Comprehensive League. Our non-league schedule of Apponequet, Bishop Stang, Blue Hills and Diman will give us many interesting games to play as well,” Coach Lincoln said.
