TIVERTON — The Tiverton girls soccer team scored three first half goals and coasted to a 3-0 win against Burrillville in their playoff opener last Thursday at home.
The Tigers next faced Lincoln Tuesday (after the Times went to press) at Lincoln. Earlier this season, Tiverton lost an evenly played 1-0 game to Lincoln that left Coach Joe Gill’s players anxious to even the score. If the Tigers win. they would play next in the semis on Saturday afternoon.
Olivia Bergandy tallied two goals for Tiverton.
“One of her goals was a beauty, off an outstanding cross from the left side by Sam Welchman that Sam one-touched.” Welchman also scored one of Tiverton’s three goals.
Tiverton defenders Maya Bergandy and Elizabeth Janick effectively marked and frustrated Burrillville’s best offensive player, limiting the Broncos’ offensive chances. Still, goalie Haley Higginbottom got a couple of good saves early in the match to prevent Burrillville from gaining any momentum.
Midfielders Jackie Wilson and Erica Farias helpedg keep the play moving in the right direction, winning won a lot of 50-50 balls and creating opportunities for the forwards.
Although any team that advances far in Division II faces the challenge of meeting unbeaten-for-two-seasons Exeter -West Greenwich,their coach said the Tiverton girls feel good about their chances, thanks in part to a last-minute loss against second place regular season Pilgrim.
Tiverton wrapped up is regular season with an 8-5-1 record that included some strong late season performances.
