Very little went well for the Tiverton High School football team on Saturday night as they lost to Classical High School by a score of 42-6. The game was a setback for a young Tiverton team that was hoping to build some momentum in what has been a winless season so far..
“My kids are really young and we are going to go through this a lot before this is over but this is part of the process of learning how to play football,” said Tiverton head coach Robert Murray. “They are trying real hard and they are giving a really good effort. We’re just overmatched.”
Giving up big plays haunted the Tigers throughout the game. In the first quarter, Tiverton gave up a deflating 83-yard touchdown run. The Tigers also gave up two punt return touchdowns in the first and third quarters.
Tiverton also struggled with turnovers. The Tigers lost two key fumbles that gave Classical the football with good field position. Classical drove the ball downfield for touchdowns after both of the fumbles.
“I saw a Classical team that physically manhandled us,” Murray said. “I saw a group of boys that tried to match their physicality for a bit but just couldn’t. I saw my kids get mauled.”
The Tigers were able to get one score late in the fourth quarter as senior Dylan Simmons ran the ball into the end zone after a long drive. Senior captain Matthew Deleo also did well on the drive as he ran the football multiple times for large chunks of yardage.
Tiverton came into this season knowing it was going to be a difficult with such a young roster. The team only has four seniors so is relying heavily on young players to lead the team and with youth comes inconsistency.
“There is no question we have improved. Tonight wasn’t a night where we demonstrated a lot of improvement,” Murray said. “You are going to get that with young teams — they are going to be up and then down. It’s a process of growing.”
Tiverton is now 0-3 and tied for last in the league standings with Lincoln High School. The Tigers are hoping to have better results next week at they take on Middletown High School on Friday at 7 p.m. The game is being played at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown.
