Three share the lead after two rounds of NEPGA Championship play at Wannamoisett, Ledgemont

EAST PROVIDENCE — Playing at the more stringent Wannamoisett Country Club layout for Round 2 Tuesday, Aug. 20, Shelter Harbor pro Ricky Bruns came back to the field a bit but remains in a three-way share of the lead in the 93rd playing of the New England PGA Championship.

All three players at the top traversed the renowned Donald Ross-design in Rumford Tuesday after opening the event just across the state line at Seekonk’s Ledgemont C.C.

Bruns, based out the fledgling Charlestown, R.I., course and who held the lead after he carded a 6-under Day 1 score, shot a 2-over 71, leaving him at 4-under for the tournament and tied for first place with Kirk Hanefeld, of Renaissance Golf Club, who carded an even par round of 69, and Jeff Seavey, of Samoset Resort, who carded a 1-over 70.

Shawn Warren, of Nonesuch River G.C., and Matt Zdon, of Belmont C.C., finished their second rounds at 3-under par and in a share of fourth.

Two of the other Rhode Islander’s in the field remain in the hunt. Wannamoisett’s own Troy Pare shot an even-par round of 69 at his home course to share sixth with defending champ Eddie Kirby, of Cranston’s Alpine, at 2-under after two rounds. Pare and Kirby posted identical scores Tuesday at Wannamoisett after playing Ledgemont Monday.

It was clear, the scoring venue was Ledgemont. Day 1 saw 17 players under par there, with just one at Wannamoisett. Day 2 found the group of players who were on fire in Seekonk muster only two under par rounds in Rumford.

After splitting the first two days at the two venues, the third and last round of the event takes place Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Wannamoisett.
