Shoot hoops with the Elks on Dec. 1

Mt. Hope knocked off Tiverton and Portsmouth last week.

Youngsters looking for a sure spot in the basketball hall of fame should start working on their free throws.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, the Bristol County Elks Lodge #1860 will host the local round of the 41st annual Elks’ Hoop Shoot. The national free throw shooting contest is open to boys and girls between 8 and 13.

Over three million kids took part in last year’s event, which includes three age categories, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Eligibility is based on a child’s age as of April 1, 2013.

Each contestant has 25 shots. The boy and girl winner from each age group who score the best must advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals.

The names of national winners are inscribed on the Elks’ National “Hoop Shoot” plaque, which is on permanent display in the Naismith Memorial Fall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

The local event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3. It will be held at Mount Hope High School beginning at 1 p.m. with registration at 12:30. There is no entry fee. The event is open to residents of Bristol, Warren and Barrington.

Bristol County winners will compete against other contestants in the Rhode Island east District competition in Jan. 2013. Bristol County Elks Lodge has been successful in sending competitors to the national finals in past years and has one had one finalist finish third in the nation.
