Riverside softball bests Ferri, moves on to quarterfinals

EAST PROVIDENCE—The Riverside Middle School girls softball team defeated Ferri, 10-5, during a home playoff game on Tuesday afternoon. The win boosts the Vikings into the quarterfinals game to be played at Chariho on Friday. 

Riverside scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Shelby Mello. Co-captain Sadie Patterson singled with two outs setting the table for Mello, who drilled a bomb over the left fielder.

Co-captain Alyssa Guarino, Raevyn Watson, Taylor Babcock, and Emma Dasilva hit consecutive singles for two more runs in the second inning for a Vikings, 4-0, lead. 

Riverside’s Raevyn Watson scored in the third and fifth using aggressive and head-ups base running. In the fifth, Watson stole second and third and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Babcock.

Ferri fought back in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with no outs and scoring four runs, closing the gap, 7-5.

Co-captain Caroline Feeley, Sadie Patterson, Shelby Mello, Alyssa Guarino, and Raevyn Watson contributed in three more Vikings runs in the sixth.
