PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High School finished sixth in the Eastern Division Championship for boys’ track on Monday, with Seth Oliveira proving himself the best in the division in the pole vault event.
Nine teams competed in the meet held at Barrington High School, where runners in the track events had to deal with a strong head wind as they headed toward the finish line.
In the field events, Oliveira took first place in pole vaulting, clearing 12 feet, six inches with Barrington’s Jonathan Cavanaugh taking second place with his 12-foot vault. The Patriots’ Josh Mostert took third in the event.
In addition to Oliveira’s and Mostert’s performances, the Patriots’ team collected its 47 points with several athletes placing among the top four finishers. John Futoma (400 meter), Jase Garner, Jalen Perry, Alex Eyster, Futoma (4×100 relay), and Eyster in the javelin all took third place in the division. Coming in fourth to give the Patriots points were Eyster (400 meter), and Patrick Hook (1,500, 3,000 meter).
The team will travel to Westerly High School on Saturday, May 24, where they will compete against 13 other schools in the Class B Championship meet.
The Patriots completed their regular season schedule with a 6-3 record and in fourth place in the Eastern Division.
