PORTSMOUTH — It was win one, lose one for the Portsmouth High School girls’ indoor track team Saturday.
The Patriots competed in a dual meet Saturday at Providence Career and Technical Academy in Providence, where they beat Westerly, 67-38, but lost to La Salle, 27.5-80.5.
There were several standout showings by the lady Patriots Saturday, according to coach Jeff Rose. Among them was the outstanding performance of distance runner Sofia White, who’s only a freshman.
“Sofia just ran her first 3,000 and she almost broke the school record; it’s going to be very close,” said Mr. Rose, right after the freshman put up a time of 11:47.1 — just shy of the school record of 11:46.3 — in taking fifth place.
Sofia also ran the 1,000-meter event, taking fifth place with a time of 3:35.5.
Jessica Kaufman and Leah Hibbad went one-two in the 300-meter dash, with the two seniors recording times of 46.34 and 46.64, respectively.
The Patriots also won two relay events. The 4×200-meter team of junior Greta Scott, sophomore Caroline Platt and seniors Jessica Kaufman and Leah Hibbad put up a time of 1:51.74 to edge La Salle.
The 4×400-meter team of Greta Scott, Caroline Platt and sophomores Ally Merrill and Maddie Hobbs recorded a time of 4:32.9 to take first.
Junior Abby Cousens took first place in the weight throw, finishing with a best toss of 40 feet, 7.75 inches.
Leah Hibbad (7.94) and Greta Scott (8.24) placed second and third, respectively, in the 55-meter dash.
PHS competed in every event except for the high jump, said Mr. Rose, who likes what he’s seen from his squad so far.
“So far, we’re looking pretty good. It’s a little tough to tell because this is our first meet — both of our dual meets have been snowed out — so I’m excited today to see what we’ve got,” he said. “Our first meet was actually the state qualifier invitational and we have the number-one 55-meter time in the state right now.”
The girls’ indoor track team next competes Thursday, Jan. 9, in another dual meet at Providence Career and Technical Academy, where they’ll go up against Mt. Hope High School and Smithfield. The meet begins at 5:30 p.m.
