PORTSMOUTH — It took the Portsmouth High School boys’ hockey team three regulation periods and four minutes into overtime before it skated away with a 3-2 victory over Toll Gate on Friday.

At the end of the first period, neither team could score as they battled for control of the puck. But seven and a half minutes into the second period, Toll Gate found a hole and took a 1-0 lead.

Taking advantage of a Toll Gate penalty, the Patriots’ Kevin Manning, on a power play, struck back to tie the game at 1-1. His goal came assisted by Kyle Alvanas and Ryan Goulart.

With a point on the boards and only one win this season, Toll Gate tried to keep the pressure on Portsmouth, but the Patriots fought back.

Midway through the third period, it was Toll Gate that took advantage of a power play, taking a temporary 2-1 lead. Their advantage was short-lived, however, after the short-handed Patriots scored again, this time off the stick of Evan Alvanas, unassisted.

Tied at 2 at the end of regulation, the clock was set at five minutes for an overtime period. The Patriots used 3:50 of overtime before Kyle McGowan spotted an open Alec Rodrigues, who slapped the puck in for the win.

The much-needed win brought the Patriots to a league record of 3-9 with six more opportunities in their remaining schedule to boost their standings in Division II Central.

Portsmouth will play North Smithfield on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Levy Rink. On Saturday, Feb. 15, the team faces off against the Rogers co-op team at Magiera rink.
