Members of the Portsmouth High School boys’ and girls’ track teams were tested at Saturday’s 2014 Rhode Island Interscholastic League Outdoor Track Championships, where two student-athletes took second-place finishes in their events.

Ashley MacMillian, a senior, took home a silver medal for her second-place throw in the javelin where she reached a distance of 111 feet, 11 inches.

For the boys’ team, senior Seth Oliveira found himself in a head-to-head battle with North Kingstown’s Benjamin Rudman, settling for second place after fouling on his last attempt to clear 13 feet, 6 inches.

On his third and final attempt, Oliveira’s hands slipped, giving him silver for his best vault of the day at 13 feet even.

“My hands were sweating and I’m tired,” Oliveira said after taking the foul. “Ben is a really good vaulter.”
