BARRINGTON — St. Andrew’s School’s Mike Hart was selected by his peers as the 2013-2014 NEPSAC Class AA Co-Coach of the Year along with Barry Connors of Cushing Academy, the league announced Thursday, March 6.
For Hart, the honor was another in a season-long list of accomplishments, which included him earning his 400th career victory on the Saints’ bench. St. Andrew’s finished the winter with a 27-5 record, losing to Connors’ Penguins in the Class AA semifinal. It was the second year in a row the Saints suffered a gut-wrenching loss to Cushing. Last year, the Penguins defeated St. Andrew’s for the title on a buzzer beater. This winter, Cushing won its second consecutive championship by beating Kimball Union in the final. Connors led Cushing to a 23-6 record this season.
Of importance as well to Coach Hart, the St. Andrew’s team, which featured future Division I college players Bonzie Colson (Notre Dame) and Henry Bolton of Portsmouth (Utah State), maintained a combined grade point average of over 3.0.
Also announced Thursday was the coaches’ selection of Kimball Union’s Abdul-Malik Abu as the NEPSAC Class AA Player of the Year. Abu, a 6-foot-8 power forward, is signed to play at North Carolina State University in the fall.
