Patriots slams previously unbeaten Hendricken

Portsmouth rode a big third quarter to beat previously undefeated Bishop Hendricken 39-13 Saturday evening in Portsmouth.

The Patriots improved to 4-1 in Division I and is now one of three teams with a single loss. LaSalle becomes the only Division I unbeaten team.

Leading 9-7 at halftime, Portsmouth broke open what had been a tight defensive contest with its 30-point third quarter outburst. Hendricken managed no scores in the third quarter and added six points in the final quarter, by which time the game was well out of reach.

Quarterback Bobby Chavous went 14 for 20, accumulating 152 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 18 times for 170 yards and a touchdown, the longest good for 59 yards.

Matt Sewall caught six of those passes for 55 yards, while Matt Greenman caught four for 48 yards and scored a touchdown.

Austin Szczepaniak rushed 23 times for 73 yards and two touchdowns while Greenman ran just once — but that once was good for 78 yards.

Sewall was also a standout on defense with seven solo tackles and an assist. Travis O’Brien chipped in with five tackles and an assist to go with two sacks and two recovered fumbles, while Greenman managed six solos and an assist. Jake Hatcher also recorded a sack.

Portsmouth next has a showdown with Cranston East in Cranston this Friday at 7 p.m. Cranston East is undefeated in home games so far this season. Both teams go into the contest with 6-1 overall records.
