PORTSMOUTH — The Newport Girls’ Interscholastic Polo Team made a strong showing in the national championship held recently in Storrs, Conn.

The team finished third in the nation at the U.S. Polo Association’s National Interscholastic Polo Championship. In addition, the team’s Abby MacKenzie was awarded the Sportsmanship Award, and two of the horses received honorary mention in the “Best Playing Pony” voting.

Newport defeated Culver in the opening wild card round and lost to Maryland in the semifinal round. Teams from Maui and UConn — the eventual champions — also competed.

Taking third in the nationals was a great honor for the team, said Agnes Keating, co-administrator of the Newport Polo Club.

“They were very close behind the first- and second-place teams and quite a bit ahead of the others. It was a very interesting and hard-fought tournament,” she said.

It was the second year in a row that the team qualified for the nationals.
