Mt. Hope to face Tiverton in Tuesday meet

Mt. Hope’s Alyson Dion waits for a serve in game against Rogers High School. THe Huskies took the match 4 -3 to lead Div. III East.

The Mt. Hope tennis team extended their season record to 5-0, after defeating Rogers High School 4-3 last Friday. Going into the game, both teams were undefeated, but coach, Geoff Keegan, didn’t want statistics to get in the way of his team’s successful run.“I told them not to focus on the record, but to play like they normally play,” he said prior to the meet.

Even the fact that two of the teams’ key doubles players, Marisa Silva and Sarah Leger, missed Friday’s game didn’t rattle the team.

“It gives us an opportunity to test our depth,” Mr. Keegan said.

Senior, Sophie Costa paired with Lauren Manuel to win the deciding match at second doubles against Rogers’ Dori Cawley and Brielle Hansen. The Mt. Hope pair took their opponents in three sets, scoring 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

In the first doubles match-up, Destinee DeSousa teamed with Catherine McGee, handily defeating the team of Kelly Shea-Kayla Fisher of Rogers, 6-2,6-1.

Singles wins came from Alyson Dion and Simone Verria.

“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” Mr. Keegan said of the team’s early dominance in their division. “The girls who played never quit the whole match and helped us out tremendously.  Though, there is still more to do – we are taking it one game at a time and not taking any match as an ‘easy match’,” he said.

The Huskies now hold first place in their Division III East with nine games remaining in the season. The Mt. Hope girls will face Tiverton whose record stands at 4-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at Tiverton High School. That game begins at 3:30 p.m.
