The Mt. Hope High School tennis team continued its winning way on Tuesday afternoon, easily clinching an advance to the semi-final bracket to be played in North Kingstown on Thursday. The first playoff match-up was held at Slater Park in Pawtucket, where the Huskies faced Warwick Veterans High School winning 3-1.

“The girls definitely know what they have accomplished this season but after having a lost to North Smithfield, we regrouped and were not taking any match for granted,” said coach Geoff Keegan. “We knew facing Woonsocket, even though their record was 1-12, they would be a tough opponent. Luckily, the girls played well and we got the win 6-1.”

Mr. Keegan said that the team will continue to prepare for the post season play in the same manner they prepared all season.

“We are focusing on one match at a time and continuing with the same drive we’ve had all season to win matches and play good tennis,” he said.

Placed in a new division this season, Mr. Keegan did not know what to expect of the new competition, having faced only Rogers and Tiverton High Schools in previous seasons.

“All I had for information to go off of for the other teams were last year’s records of every team we were facing this year,” he said.

(North Smithfield was 10-4, Tolman 6-8, Woonsocket 4-10, Shea 3-11, St. Raphael 0-14).

“I figured we had a good shot to compete within the division and at least go .500 on the season. Plus, we knew we had to bounce back from 4-8 record last season,” he said.

After beating Woonsocket, Mt. Hope held onto first place in their division and number one seed for the playoffs. In the quarter-final, Mt. Hope, with a 13-1 record, faced Warwick Veterans, with a 13-1 record.

The Huskies gave up one match in singles play on Tuesday, but a 3rd doubles win by Lauren Manuel and Sophie Costa clinched the quarter-finals and moved the team into the semi-finals.
