Mt. Hope girls take one, lose one in dual meet

The Mt. Hope girls track team lost a close meet with Barrington, 84 1/2 to 69 1/2, but beat Rogers 124-22. The Huskies are now 3-1 on the season.

“The 15 point difference to Barrington was even closer than that as many races came down to the last few meters,” said coach, Andrew Sabourin.  “Overall I was very pleased, the girls gave it their best effort.  There’s not much more we could’ve done.  Twenty-one different athletes scored points in the meet, we broke three school records, tied another one and broke a freshman school record. You can’t ask for more than that.”

Lucy Spence was a double winner again taking the long and triple jumps and broke her own school record in the long jump (15′ 6 3/4″). Megan Vento won the 200m (28.3), and was second in the long jump and the 100m.

Vento teamed with Jordan Perroni, Kylie McPherson and Nicole Rusin to win the 4x100m and break a school record in the event. McPherson also broke her own school record in the 400m (61.6) taking second place and also was runner-up in the 100m high hurdles, tying her own school record (16.1).

Rusin was victorious in the high jump (4′ 6″) and teamed with McPherson, Aly Dion and Karina Tavares to win the 4x400m. Other top competitors were Kelly Coccio, who placed second in pole vault, Hayley Cambrola who took second in hammer and third in shot put, Marisa Silva, second in the discus, Tavares, a second in the 3000m and 800m, Hazel Baldwin-Kress placing third in the 300mH and Kaitlyn Ouellette’s fourth in the javelin.

“Three athletes who really stepped up their performance were Kaitlyn Costa, Lauren Fletcher and Simone Verria,” Mr. Sabourin said. “Costa scored points in the 100m and 200m, Fletcher scored in three events, the javelin, triple jump and 800m, and Simone Verria had a sensational personal best by over two feet in the triple jump to take second place in the event.”

Mr. Sabourin said that the meet was a success despite the loss.

“The girls’ performances were great considering it’s early in the season and I only expect that they will improve throughout the season.”
