Mt. Hope girls advance to state tennis final

The Mt. Hope High School girls’ tennis team is one game away from being state champions.

Coach Geoff Keegan said that this is the first time in the school’s history that the team has advanced to the state championship where they will face Coventry High School on Sunday.

On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Huskies took the semi-final match against Scituate, winning 4-1 in North Kingstown.

“Simone Verria’s victory (6-2, 7-5) at fourth singles over Scituate’s Leah McCarvill clinched the match for Mt. Hope,” Mr. Keegan said.

On Tuesday they beat Warwick Veterans High School, 3-1 at Slater Park.

The championship match up will begin at noon on Sunday, Oct. 21 at Slater Park in Pawtucket.

Coventry High School went undefeated in Division III West with a record of 14-0. Mt. Hope finished the season in first place in Division III Metro, giving up only one game with a season record of 13-1.

1st Singles: Lauren Fletcher, Mt. Hope, defeated Jade Annaldo, Scituate, 6-4, 6-2
3rd Singles: Haley Ferreira, Mt. Hope, defeated Taramay Comeau, Scituate,6-0, 6-4
4th Singles: Simone Verria, Mt. Hope, defeated Leah McCarvill, Scituate,6-2, 7-5

Doubles
1st Doubles: Marisa Silva-Destinee DaSousa, Mt. Hope, defeated Meghan Godbout-Lindsay Cathcart, Scituate, 6-3,6-4.
2nd Doubles: Noelle Ferragamo-Emily Jodoin, Scituate, defeated Catherine McGee-Sarah Leger, Mt. Hope, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

FINAL SCORE: Mt. Hope 4, Scituate 1
