MIDDLETOWN, R.I. ─ The Mt. Hope Boys Basketball team lost a tough road battle Thursday night, falling to the Middletown Islanders, 61-45.
The Huskies, in their final of a three game road trip, could not keep up with the Islanders, as they dropped their second to last game of the regular season.
Middletown got off to a hot start, scoring the first seven points of the game before Mt. Hope junior captain Matt Scott hit a three pointer to get the Huskies on the board.
The Islanders would lead by as many as 10 in the first half, but the Huskies would drain some late buckets to cut the Middletown lead down to six, going into halftime down just 28-22.
The second half of the game would belong to Middletown, as they scored 33 points in the final 16 minutes. Mt. Hope kept fighting though, as a three pointer by senior captain Ben Francis would cut the Islanders lead down to just six, 50-44, with three minutes and 40 seconds left in the game. Middletown would then go on an 11-1 run to finish the contest.
Scott led the Huskies in scoring with 17, while Francis was second with 12, including an impressive four three pointers in the second half. Junior captain Kyle Valenzuela would add nine points, senior Eric Pattie and junior Jared Ramos would each score three, and senior Pat Guthlein would add one point of his own.
Randy Butler and Connor Ross led Middletown in scoring, with 20 points each, while Justin Bailey scored seven, and David Brown would add six. Mark Powell and Ryan Traever would round out the Islanders scoring, each adding four points.
The loss drops the Huskies to 13-7 on the season, with a 10-7 record in the division, maintaining their place of second in Division III East. Middletown improves to 19-3 overall, 14-3 in the division, having already clinched the Division III East title.
Mt. Hope’s final game of the regular season brings them home to face St. Patrick Academy on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Middletown’s final regular season game has them at home on Friday night against Moses Brown.Add to favorites
