JP Medeiros, a long-time Warren resident who has helped shape the East Bay’s sports landscape has been given an award for his service by the Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (RIIAAA). He’ll receive his award at a banquet planned for Thursday, April 4, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

He attended St. Elizabeth’s School in Bristol, graduated from Bristol High School in 1970 and while there wrestled and played football and baseball. He played two years of Bbaseball while attending Barrington College, earning the Batting title and M.V.P. Award his freshman season. He transferred to Rhode Island College, where he earned his bachelor of science degree in health and physical education.

Mr. Medeiros spent seven years as an assistant baseball coach at Bristol High School, and left coaching to begin umpiring high school baseball, which he did for 18 years. He was twice awarded the  “Pard Pearse Memorial Award,” and in 2003 was given The Hall of Fame Award.

He was also Barrington’s football game announcer and in 2005 was recognized as Rhode Island Announcer of the Year. Medeiros Jr. Memorial Cup Game has been played every January for 11 years, and has generated more than 40 scholarships for both boy and girl hockey players from Barrington and Mt.
