On Thursday’s game against Tiverton, junior guard Matt Scott led the Huskies, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds, while also finishing with four steals and two blocked shots. Senior forward Ben Francis scored 17 points, had six rebounds, one assist, three steals and a block.
At the half, the Huskies led 36-25. Junior guard Kyle Valenzuela contributed to the Huskies’ win, putting up 15 points, five assists, three rebounds and seven steals.
Also contributing to the Huskies success were senior forward Matt McGee who had eight points and two rebounds; junior forward Nick Murgo scored four points and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore guard Alex Francis scored four points, and senior forward Eric Pattie drained a three-pointer, and had one rebound and a steal.
Mt. Hope vs. Portsmouth
In their second game of the tournament played on Friday, the Huskies defeated Portsmouth High School, 66-39, and improved their record to 5-3 overall.
Junior guard Matt Scott led the Huskies with 39 points, eight rebounds and seven steals, followed by senior forward Ben Francis who scored seven points with four rebounds, helping the Huskies to a 29-14 lead at halftime.
Junior guard Kyle Valenzuela racked up six points and one assist for the Huskies’ offense, and contributed defensively with four steals. Junior forward Nick Murgo scored five points, and snared 14 rebounds and three steals.
Junior forward Jared Ramos scored five points, with six rebounds and a block, while senior forward Pat Guthlein had two points and three rebounds.
Mt. Hope will try to improve their 2-3 Division II regular season record when they square off against Juanita Sanchez with a 3-1 record at Juanita Sanchez Complex, 182 Thurbers Ave. in Providence on Friday, Jan. 4.
The Huskies will host Warwick Veterans High School, whose record stands at 1-4, on Monday, Jan. 7. Both games start at 7 p.m.
