The Townies, the top seed on its half of the bracket after finishing first in the I-North regular season standings, shut out the Chargers, the fourth seed out of I-South, by the scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-14. East Providence advances to the state semifinals Tuesday night, June 11, opposite South Kingstown, 3-2 winners over Bishop Hendricken Thursday.
Jacob Bedford led the locals with eight kills and also had a team-best 10 digs in the victory. John Vaughn chipped in five kills and had that many blocks for the Townies, who improved their record to 13-4 overall. The Chargers finished their season with a 6-11 record, including a 3-0 loss to East Providence back on May 9.
The Townies and Rebels, 15-2 overall and the second seed from I-South, meet in one semi Tuesday at the Providence Career & Tech Academy Field House at 5:30 p.m. E.P. lost to South, 3-2, in the only regular season meeting between the sides on May 2.
Overall No. 1 seed Coventry (17-1, first in I-South) faces Mount St. Charles (12-5, second seed from I-North) in the other semifinal Tuesday night at the PCTA Field House at 7:30. The Knotty Oakers swept Cranston East in their quarterfinal match. The Mounties beat North Kingstown, 3-2, in theirs.
