East Providence High advances to Division II baseball group final

EAST PROVIDENCE — Top-seeded East Providence High School will square off against Narragansett in the final round of the Division II baseball Pod I regional Wednesday afternoon, June 4, at Pierce Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 o’clock.

The Townies enter the contest unbeaten in pod play after having dispatched Tiverton and the same Mariners in their first two contests. East Providence advanced to the final round courtesy of a 13-0 rout of Narragansett, May 31, at Pierce. Keith Grant allowed just two hits and struck out six in his five-inning stint on the hill for the locals. The game ended after four-and-a-half innings due to the 10-Run Rule.

Offensively, the Townies erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second inning, added a single run in the third then plated seven more in the fourth to turn the game into a rout. Jasiah Hatch paced the 12-hit East Providence attack with three hits and four runs batted in. Collin Costa and Kyle Marquis added two hits apiece. Marquis scored three times.

The Mariners bounced back to record a 7-6 victory over Tiverton Monday, June 2, in the losers’ bracket final. Narragansett broke to a 3-0 lead after one inning before the Tigers answered to eventually take a 6-4 advantage by the top of the fifth. The Mariners, however, rallied with three runs in the home half of the frame to regain the lead for keeps.

A victory by East Providence Wednesday would send the Townies into the tournament semifinals opposite the lowest remaining seed in the event this weekend in a best-of-three series also at Pierce. A win by the Mariners would force a deciding game for the Pod I title in Narragansett Thursday afternoon, June 5.
