Cam Voight won three straight matches and will play against Smithfield’s Matt Kuhar, the top-seeded player in the state, in the finals. Voight opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Daniel Simonds of Mt. Hope. He defeated East Providence’s Troy Derrick, 6-1, 6-0 in the second round and later defeated LaSalle’s Marco Amendola, 6-2, 6-0 in the semis.
Voight will face off against Kuhar on Sunday, May 26 at noon at Slater Park.
Scanlon, a freshman, knocked off Prout’s Brandon Hazelton, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and then defeated PCD’s Joe DiOrio, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He was eliminated after losing to a LaSalle netter, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
The doubles team of Aiden and Christian Egglin defeated Danish Azam-Nick Lowinger of Wheeler to qualify for the tournament and won 6-1, 6-0 over a Chariho team in the first round.
The Barrington High School tennis team knocked off East Greenwich, 7-0, in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday afternoon. Voight rallied after losing the first set, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Barrington’s other singles players, Scanlon, Malcolm Kraus, and Will Hemingway all won in straight sets.
The Eagles will play one of their biggest matches of the year on Thursday, squaring off Smithfield in the Division I semifinals. The match will be played at Slater Park at 3 p.m. The team match will also serve as a preview of the RI Individual Tennis Tournament finals, which will pit Voight against Smithfield’s Matt Kuhar.Add to favorites
