Former Barrington High School standout Charlie Ionata won the USATF Junior Outdoor National Championships at the University of Oregon on Sunday.

Barrington High School graduate and Wake Forest University student Charlie Ionata won the men’s hammer throw event at the USATF Junior Outdoor National Championships at the University of Oregon on Sunday.

In addition, current Barrington High School student Adam Kelly finished in fifth place at the same event.

Ionata, who will be a sophomore at Wake Forest in the fall, will represent the United States as a member of the U.S. Junior National Team at the IAAF World Junior Championships at historic Hayward Field on the University of Oregon in Eugene next week.

On Sunday, Ionata threw the hammer 222 feet, 1 inch (67.70 meters). Kelly’s top throw was 210 feet, 9 inches.

Placing second, and one inch behind Ionata, was 2013 Central High graduate Clarence Gallop (222 feet). University of Rhode Island incoming sophomore and South Kingstown High graduate Mahlik Handley finished fourth in the competition.
