The 2013-14 Barrington Middle School girls’ basketball team enjoys a candid moment after a recent game. The team completed its regular season with a 17-1 record, the best in Rhode Island Middle School history.

The Barrington Middle School girls’ basketball team had a victorious ending to its 18 game regular season schedule, beating St. Mary Academy-Bay View on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 51-20.

The middle school team finished 17-1 for the season, a record number of wins in a single season for a Rhode Island middle school team, said head coach, Mike Topazio.

“It’s been a nice ride for the team,” Mr. Topazio said after winning the last regular season game.

Throughout the season the team has averaged 46 points per game.

“It’s such a good group,” Mr. Topazio said. “We haven’t had many push games.”

For a team comprised of 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls, they were able to understand and execute schemes on the court typically not introduced until high school, said Mr. Topazio.

“We play a 1-3 match and these girls just get it,” he said. “It’s just a smart, smart group and a talented group.”

Before the game, the girls walked into the gymnasium at Bay View haunted by last year’s play-off loss inside the same venue. But it wasn’t long before the team settled in and did what they’ve done all season – outplay and outscore their opponent.

The girls will participate in post-season play offs with their first game to take place at Barrington Middle School on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

The Barrington Middle School girls’ basketball team includes players: Bella Ceseretti, Andrea Kubas-Meyer, Elizabeth Hutchings, Mary Cowden, Riley Kloc, Julia Fortin, Caroline Adamson, Katherine Faulkner, Lucy McMillan, Claire Gafney, Annie Berkery, Rylan Hastings, Olivia Middleton, Patsy Ceseretti, Alex Marinelli, Zahra Breers, Maile Sumera, Lindsey Dawson, Grace Faulkner, Cary Heterick, Faith Buckley, Elizabeth Berkery, Elizabeth McConaghy, Gabrielle Ellicott

I have been so blessed to have the opportunity to coach such a talented, smart, fun, and well behaved team the past 2 years. Its so gratifying to able to pass along some knowledge that I have attained throughout my 35 years of coaching and pass it along to a group who for various reasons just seems to “get It!”..Hopefully we can capture this year, what escaped us last year in the final 2 minutes of the championship game…a State Title. But whatever happens in the next week or two, this season has been one for the record books already, A Division Championship and a R.I Middle School Girl’s Basketball record for wins in a regular season,17! Its been a blast. Coach T
