The Barrington Middle School girls’ basketball team had a victorious ending to its 18 game regular season schedule, beating St. Mary Academy-Bay View on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 51-20.
The middle school team finished 17-1 for the season, a record number of wins in a single season for a Rhode Island middle school team, said head coach, Mike Topazio.
“It’s been a nice ride for the team,” Mr. Topazio said after winning the last regular season game.
Throughout the season the team has averaged 46 points per game.
“It’s such a good group,” Mr. Topazio said. “We haven’t had many push games.”
For a team comprised of 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls, they were able to understand and execute schemes on the court typically not introduced until high school, said Mr. Topazio.
“We play a 1-3 match and these girls just get it,” he said. “It’s just a smart, smart group and a talented group.”
Before the game, the girls walked into the gymnasium at Bay View haunted by last year’s play-off loss inside the same venue. But it wasn’t long before the team settled in and did what they’ve done all season – outplay and outscore their opponent.
The girls will participate in post-season play offs with their first game to take place at Barrington Middle School on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
