Barrington girls place third in Northeast regional harrier event

WAPPINGER FALLS, N.Y. — The Barrington High School girls – this year’s state team titlists – finished third in the annual Nike Cross Country Northeast qualifier held Saturday, Nov. 24, in upstate New York.
The Eagles missed out on earning an automatic berth, but still may get selected as an “at-large’’ team to travel to the upcoming Nike Nationals in Portland, Ore.
The North Kingstown girls – running as Excel-erate Track Club – placed 15th among the teams.
Barrington freshman Emma Mc Millan, the 2012 R.I. state individual champ, was the first Eagle runner over the line, running seventh overall in 18:43.
“It was pretty tight at the beginning,’’ said Mc Millan, who placed third at the New England meet. “We ran well. We had big expectations. I felt pretty strong going uphill.’’
“We had phenomenal performances,’’ said Eagle coach Annmarie Marino of her team’s effort. “We ran well.’’
The individual girls’ winner was Elinore Purrier, of Vermont, a two-time New England champ, in 18:09.
In the boys’  event, Hendricken – running as the Hawk Track Club – placed fifth among teams (223 points). The La Salle Cross Country Club finished eighth (271), with the East Greenwich Track Club at No. 14 (442). Bryce Kelley, running for the Charger Track Club, was the top R.I. finisher at Nike; he placed seventh in 16:10. Tony Russell, of the Warrier TC, was the individual champ in 15:51.
Course Notes:  In the 23-year history of the Foot Locker national meet, five Rhode Island boys, before Crawley, advanced to the U.S. meet (which, at one point, was held at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.) The first local boy was Paul Haput, of Rogers High, in 1980. Haupt wound up finishing 31st .  . . Another Viking runner – Mike Pieroni – went to the 1984 Nationals, and crossed the line in 13th spot, good for an All-American berth . . . Chris Magill, the St. Raphael All-Stater ran in the 1989 Foot Locker Nationals, finishing 31st overall . . . Another Saints’ harrier – Keith Woodman – was 16th at the 1993 Foot Locker event . . . And Westerly’s Andrew Springer made it to the 2008 Nationals, where he placed 28th overall . . . The only R.I. female harrier to make Foot Locker’s national championship was Laura Turner, of Portsmouth High. Turner qualified twice for the U.S. event (1996 and ‘97), finishing All-American (13th place) at the 1997 run.
