For the fortunate students at Oldham E.S. in Riverside they are on the receiving end of a $20K S.T.E.M. grant targeted to assist 4th and 5th graders in the areas of Science and Engineering.
This letter was in the June Highlights sent Barrington High School parents. I am outraged that students are expected to pay for time with teachers before finals. There’s no way that this time being paid for is not taking away from the time these teachers would otherwise spend with students who shouldn’t have to pay for it. It is public school. It doesn’t matter where the money is going!
Dear Parent/Guardian of BHS Student,
As the 2014-2015 school year comes to a close, final exams are right around the corner. The week of exams is one of the most important for underclassmen, and also one of most stressful. In order to ease some of this anxiety, the sophomore class has organized a week of tutoring sessions with teachers at BHS the week before exams. Starting the week of June 1st, the 2017 class officers will be raffling off one-on-one, hour-long tutoring sessions with teachers from each department. Interested students from grades 9-11 will be able to enter their names into the raffle by buying a ticket for $1, or six tickets for $5. They can sign up for a specific subject they would like help with and a teacher from the department of that subject will be available to meet with them. The tickets will be on sale the entire week (from June 1st to the 5th) and the winners of the session(s) will be announced during the week of June 8th.
It is important that you know these sessions should not be your child’s only study periods if they do win and they should also not rely on winning the raffle. This is intended to be extra assistance for studying for finals, as teachers would not normally meet with students for this long or as closely. We strongly encourage students to enter the raffle as it would be very beneficial to their understanding of a subject they may not be confident with. However, they must also keep in mind some of the stud- ying must be done on their own, without the help of teachers.
We hope that you will take these sessions into consideration as finals week is much closer than it seems, and preparation is crucial for exams.
