EAST PROVIDENCE — A glimpse up towards the landmark water tower in East Providence showed the protective sheeting surrounding the structure erected recently as part of the renovation process was severely compromised by tropical storm force winds Monday, Oct. 30.
East Providence Public Works Director Steve Coutu said, obviously, no work was being done on the approximately $1.2 million project earlier in the week. He said the sheeting, though flailing in the gusts, was secure and is constructed to lose some of its resistance, tear away while still tethered when winds reach a certain speed. Gusts in the early morning hours and throughout the day consistency registered in the 40 mile per hour range with a high of 58 mph.
Mr. Coutu said Monday’s weather would likely set back crews a day or two in the process of repairing the 175-foot structure internally and externally. He asserted the project is still on track to be completed by the end of the year, noting efforts would be constrained with the onset of winter.
“Any rainy or windy day is not a good day,” Mr. Coutu added. “If you think the wind is blowing hard at ground level, imagine what it’s like way up there.”
